ASU SkySong hits entrepreneurial high notes in 4 years
From The Arizona Republic:
Arizona State University's SkySong business-development program has undergone dramatic changes in its first four years of existence. In some respects, the program is still trying to define its proper role in the community.
Founded in 2008, ASU SkySong opened in the middle of a recession as an effort to connect Arizona State University's pool of intellectual talent with the Phoenix area's vibrant but fragmented entrepreneurial community.
Program administrators are now pushing even harder to encourage entrepreneurs and businesses to license and market a variety of ASU-developed inventions that include an anti-nerve gas, a plant-based antibody for West Nile virus, security improvements to mobile cloud computing, tunable microchip-based microphones and a 3-D face-recognition system.
They recently launched a major new competition focused on university-owned intellectual property and are revamping one of ASU SkySong's existing business-development programs, school officials said.

SkySong Inks Several New Leases; Begins Pre-Leasing Process For SkySong III
More than 20,000 Feet of Leases Total Signed By Three Tenants; Continued Leasing Momentum Bodes Well for Next Phases
SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center, has secured three new leases totaling 20,000 square feet, continuing the project’s momentum and bringing new jobs to south Scottsdale.
The new leasing activity also means that the SkySong team is beginning the pre-leasing process for SkySong III, which would be the next building to be constructed in the project.
Current tenant Yodle signed a lease to expand its current space by 12,000 square feet, to a total of 26,521 square feet at SkySong. The company chose to expand at SkySong over expansion in Boston or Austin because of the nearby labor force and the strategic advantages SkySong provides its tenants.
Yodle started at SkySong with a 1,946 square foot space. The new expansion will include the generation of about 85 new jobs in the project.
Two new companies to SkySong have signed leases in recent weeks as well.
Pearson, a leading company in online learning, has expanded its partnership with Arizona State University and is leasing 5,000 square feet of new space at SkySong, The ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center.
Pearson and ASU have been working together for almost a year in a partnership designed to develop new technology and management services to support ASU’s online learning efforts. The new Pearson presence at SkySong will further boost those efforts, and is expected to help ASU dramatically increase its online learning presence.
“For the past year, we have successfully partnered with ASU Online to provide technology and services that engage potential students in the enrollment process as well as retain them once they are enrolled,” said Matt Leavy, CEO of Pearson eCollege. “Our partnership has resulted in growth that is projected to triple ASU online enrollments by the end of 2011. Being on site with ASU Online at SkySong will accelerate these efforts as we work to grow this world-class online program.”
“ASU Online and Pearson's eCollege have a strong partnership focused on developing and promoting products and services delivered under the ASU Online brand,” said Phil Regier, Executive Vice Provost and Dean of ASU Online. “Pearson's newly announced presence at SkySong will allow the collaboration to take full advantage of the proximity to many other entities at SkySong engaged in advancing digital learning and technology.”
Additionally, WebFilings, a privately‐held company that offers the first and only end‐to‐end solution for external financial reporting, has agreed to lease a 2,000 square foot space at SkySong, with an additional 2,500 square feet of expansion in the next few weeks. The company develops and markets a fully‐integrated, cloud‐based solution dedicated to meeting SEC reporting requirements. ASU President Michael Crow serves on the company’s Advisory Board.

SkySong is already providing its economic potential
Guest column by Councilwoman Suzanne Klapp in The Arizona Republic
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the saying goes.
In my eyes, SkySong is a beautiful thing, particularly behind the public facade.
The Arizona State University Scottsdale Innovation Center at Scottsdale and McDowell roads has been criticized by some for not delivering as expected and by others who don't like the soaring sails or the complex's architectural design.
Yet, a look within the buildings' walls reveals creativity, entrepreneurial activity and development potential far beyond my expectations. The partnership between ASU and Scottsdale is reaping significant economic rewards, strengthening the bonds between the two organizations and positioning our city for global business.

Business Journal's Jan Buchholz makes a case for shade
Phoenix Business Journal reporter Jan Buchholz posted on the paper's blog a good case for shade structures like the one at SkySong, which was used as an example of how Arizona can make the summer months more livable and encourage economic development at the same time.
"It makes sense to promote Phoenix as a solar power powerhouse, but I think there's a niche market we've been missing. If we pursued it as a community, we'd have it made in the shade, so to speak.
"And that which I speak about is shade. Why isn't Phoenix the shade technology center of the universe? Why are structures built here that cry out: Hey, sun gods, fry us every June. July, August and September, too.
"Why aren't we making shade like it's going out of style? Moreover, why are we creating asphalt jungles that sizzle all summer long?"

SkySong cited as example of how Arizona can "play to its strengths"
From the Sunday Arizona Republic...how Arizona should play to its strengths when it comes to economic development, with SkySong as one of the models of a success story. Read the whole article HERE.
"There's an old legal term, coined by Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, which describes the principle of federalism as the "laboratory of the states." That is, because states can to a certain extent write their own laws and set their own policies, they can seek what works on their own without having to wait for guidance (or orders) from Washington.
"The principle applies just as well to economic matters and is one that every state should be taking to heart right now. We don't know where the economy is headed, but we can predict one thing: Washington isn't going to provide the silver bullet that saves Arizona or any other state. Arizonans must save themselves with smart polices and good decisions."
